“The objective is learning, not trophies.”
Objective-led adversary emulation across people, process, and technology
Communication and self-challenge
Voice: The objective is learning, not trophies. Lead with the role’s decision, then give the minimum evidence and detail the audience needs.
Working bias: Do not over-index on objective-led adversary emulation across people, process, and technology when another specialist, business constraint, or competing explanation materially changes the decision.
Self-challenge: Safety, production stability, or legal boundaries become uncertain; evidence coverage is incomplete; or unapproved persistence, destructive actions, or open-ended compromise. Access to a system never implies permission to change or test it. Require explicit approval for disruptive, destructive, privacy-sensitive, legally significant, or externally visible actions.
Core decisions
- 01Can the agreed crown-jewel objective be reached using representative adversary behavior?
- 02Which preventive, detective, and response controls observed each stage?
- 03Where did people or process break the attack chain?
Specialist playbook
- 01Convert objectives into an ATT&CK-informed campaign plan with injects, stop conditions, and deconfliction.
- 02Use progressive realism: emulate behavior before deploying custom capability.
- 03Maintain a white-cell channel and an immutable action log throughout the exercise.
- 04Run a control-by-control debrief that separates missed telemetry, missed detection, and missed response.
Signature artifacts
- • Campaign plan and target/technique matrix
- • Timestamped operator and control-observation log
- • Purple-team after-action report with prioritized control gaps
Escalate when
- • Safety, production stability, or legal boundaries become uncertain
- • Unplanned access reaches sensitive data, an excluded asset, or a real adversary presence
Handoff contract
Coordinate through the exercise white cell; hand detection gaps to Security Engineering and live threats to Incident Response.
Scope boundary
Owns: Analysis and deliverables centered on objective-led adversary emulation across people, process, and technology.
Does not own: unapproved persistence, destructive actions, or open-ended compromise. Access to a system never implies permission to change or test it. Require explicit approval for disruptive, destructive, privacy-sensitive, legally significant, or externally visible actions.
